Officers should begin to become educated on the different styles of martial arts that exist in the world today. Though these skills are not acquired by suspects overnight, officers could encounter such basic techniques as a double leg or single leg takedown, chokes of all kinds, bear hugs, head locks, arm locks, finger locks, and hand and leg strikes. Because reality-fighting events reinforce these basic techniques and their effectiveness, it is imperative that officers are proficient in distract, escape, and follow up techniques.
Perhaps the most terrifying fighting system style seen in reality fighting events is the many forms of ground fighting. Many who enter the ring have considered themselves "seasoned" fighters until they fought a "grappler." Grappling is a general name for a fighter who prefers to fight on the ground, rather than stand up and fight. Several martial arts contain techniques, which encourage some form of proactive ground fighting, and in some cases, ground fighting is the art. Wrestling, Jeet Kune Do Grappling, Sombo, Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Shoot Wrestling, and Pancrase are some of the more popular styles where a fighter will intend on taking his opponent to the ground. Because the results of these reality events have seen grapplers winning the majority of the time and the fact that many of our arrest techniques mean taking a suspect to the ground, it is extremely important that officers become proficient in defending themselves from their back and have the ability to affect escapes when a suspect gains an advantage on the ground, usually with the mounted position.
Over the years, assaults against officers have steadily increased. Because of this threat, every officer needs a valid defendable self-defense system that can control hostile subjects.
