Larry Hartsell Biography

Guro Dan Inosanto

Hartsell began his studies with Guro Dan Inosanto in the 1960's.  During his studies with Inosanto, Hartsell was introduced and studied with Grandmaster Edmond Parker Senior and Si Gung Bruce Lee.

Guro Inosanto is known for the World's Leading Authority in Jeet Kune Do.

"People are still trying to define Jeet Kune Do in terms of distinct style, i.e. Bruce Lee’s Gung-Fu, Bruce Lee’s Karate, Bruce Lee’s Kick-Boxing or Bruce Lee’s Street Fighting. To label Jeet Kune Do as Bruce Lee’s martial art is to miss completely its meaning; its concepts simply cannot be confined within a system. To understand this, a martial artist must transcend the duality of the "for" and "against" and reach one unity that is without distinction. The understanding of Jeet Kune Do is a direct intuition of this unity. Truth cannot be perceived until we have come to full understanding of our potential and ourselves. According to Lee, knowledge in the martial arts ultimately means self-knowledge."-- Guro Dan Inosanto

Lee Jun Fan Gung Fu
The Inosanto Academy is an outgrowth of the "Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute", which was founded by the late Bruce Lee in February 1967. Dan Inosanto was appointed head instructor of the "Jun Fan Gung Fu Institute" at this time. Bruce Lee made only three instructors in his lifetime. Taky Kimura, James Lee (deceased) and Dan Inosanto.

Emphasizing the "ranges of combat". From long distance, or "kicking range," to middle distance, or "hand-range," to close quarters, or "trapping & grappling range." Students are taught to confidently and with ease flow from long distance, or "kicking range," to middle distance, or "hand-range," to close quarters, or "trapping & grappling range."

The Jun Fan Gung Fu classes at the Inosanto Academy are devoted entirely to teaching and preserving the arts & philosophies of the late Bruce Lee. To this day the Inosanto Academy continues to research and promote arts from different countries and cultures.

We are all climbing different paths through the mountain of life, and we have all experienced much hardship and strife.
There are many paths through the mountain of life, and some climbs can be felt like the point of a knife.
Some paths are short and others are long, who can say which path is right or wrong?
The beauty of truth is that each path has its own song, and if you listen closely you will find where you belong.
So climb your own path true and strong, but respect all other truths for your way for them could be wrong.

-Dan Inosanto

Hartsell under the tutelage of Inosanto became the acknowledge master of the Grappling Arts of Jeet Kune Do. Hartsell holds various levels of Instructorships under Guro Inosanto including, "Jun Fan, Gung Fu, Jeet Kune Do, Kali and Silat. According to Dan Inosanto, "Larry Hartsell is one of the premier Jeet Kune Do fighters of our time." Larry has been a student and personal friend of Inosanto for the past 40 years and further continues to train with him to this day becoming Inosanto’s Senior Full Instructor.

Larry Hartsell’s background and knowledge is not merely speculative. Over the past 40 years, he served in the following capacities: as military policeman in the jungles of Vietnam; on glamorous movie sets as a bodyguard to celebrities; “bouncing” in redneck bars in his native North Carolina, and in the august halls of justice. Hartsell states, “The experiences I’ve had in dealing with resisting criminals, crazies or drunks have only reinforced in me a gratitude for my instructors, initially Bruce Lee and Dan Inosanto, who encouraged me to specialize in grappling techniques.”

As a long time practitioner of the martial arts – most notably Jeet Kune Do – Hartsell was one of the first in the United States to embrace and train in Shoot Wrestling when it was introduced at the Inosanto Academy. Hartsell has always been open-minded and eager to learn. Guro Dan states, “Larry has often joined me in training and researching systems, such as Indonesian Pencak Silat, Thai Boxing, and the Filipino Martial Arts. Over the years, Larry modified his fighting structure and geared his training more toward the arts of grappling and submission. Combining his knowledge in the arts of grappling and submission with his skill in the trapping and striking arts, Larry has taken his art to a new dimension.

Guro Dan states, “Larry is one of the few martial artists who has always been open-minded and known the benefits of cross-training. Knowing the importance roll-conditioning and physical fitness play in the complex game of survival in the martial arts, Larry incorporates the proven methods of the past alongside the cutting edge techniques of the future.”
